One of the first subjects we, inspiring writers,
study since the very beginning of our literary journey is the narrator’s view
point, the focalization. Who my
narration is going to focus on? Am I going
to tell this story under which character perspective? Whose problems, interests, and problems will be
my focus? Who do I want my reader to empathize for ?
The writer thinks, rethinks and focus on the richer
character, on the one that will yield him more interesting scenes.
Nevertheless, the choice of the focalization is not
something only reserved to literature. This technique is here in real life. These
choices are made daily when they report news, facts, and situations. Different
from the author in his book, this choice will not be innocent, though. There are several interests behind the
manipulation of masses, and in many occasions, these are not the same as yours.
The reader, or if it is on television, the
television viewer, has to be aware of this
trick or technique when he comes across current reports.
Before taking a global view, before hating anyone,
try to wear his shoes. Try to see the
other version; try to understand the other focus. There are always two versions about the same
fact.
You can also think: Who benefits from this focus?
When analyzing the situation from this perspective and have this position, who
do I actually benefit? Sometimes you benefit those who want you to think the
way they do.
